"Bombardier is proud to be chosen once again by the U.S. Air Force to provide our high-performing global aircraft and our unique expertise in support of the BACN program," said Michel Ouellette, Bombardier's executive vice president of specialized aircraft, programs, and engineering.
"Our U.S.-based employees are honored to be lending their skills in support of this elite project." The indefinite delivery, indefinite quantity contract includes a firm order for one aircraft, with as many as five to follow.
Bombardier will modify the aircraft at its Wichita, Kansas, facility with interior and paint work to be done at its facility in Tucson, Arizona, the company said in a press release. "Just like America is a melting pot of other nationalities, the 430th is truly a melting pot of the Air Force.
We have fighter pilots, bomber pilots, transport pilots, tanker pilots, special operations pilots, trainer pilots, test pilots, a program manager and three enlisted career fields," Arthur explained. The fleet was designated E-11A after the USAF purchased the first previously leased aircraft in 2011. The Battlefield Airborne Communications Node (BACN) payload is integrated on a mixed fleet of manned E-11As and unmanned EQ-4B Global Hawks, although the USAF is seeking
to fully replace the EQ-4B with E-11As. It has been procured by the USAF and Air Combat Command (ACC) to support the 430th EECS in delivering effective and consistent communication channels for ground, air and naval forces operating in the US Central Command (CENTCOM) area of responsibility (AOR).
The E-11A is a modified, Bombardier Global Express 6000/BD700-1A10 business jet equipped with specialized communications relay equipment to translate between tactical comm and data links. It provides joint range extension, BLOS C2, and internet protocol-based data transfer between
dissimilar systems.
